We recommend the any-doctor plan.
Official name: Original Medicare + Medigap + a drug plan (Part D)
Here's why, based on your answers:
Why we recommend it
- You can see any doctor in the U.S. who takes Medicare.
- You'll pay more each month, but very little extra for covered care after the amount you pay first each year.
It's three pieces that work together:
- Coverage from the government (Original Medicare) — Part A (hospital coverage) and Part B (doctor coverage).
- Help with bills (a Medigap plan) — pays most of what Original Medicare doesn't pay for covered care.
- A drug plan (Part D) — covers your prescriptions.
Important: your first 6 months
For 6 months starting the month you are 65 or older and have Part B (doctor coverage), insurance companies must accept you for a Medigap plan they offer, no matter your health. They cannot charge more because of your health.
After that, in most states they can ask health questions, charge more or turn you down. State protections may differ.
Which Medigap plan? Two popular choices
Most complete (Plan G): pay more each month, almost nothing for covered care after the amount you pay first each year. Lower monthly cost (Plan N): pay less each month, with small fees at some visits.
| Most complete (Plan G) | Lower monthly cost (Plan N) | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | Higher | Usually lower |
| Amount you pay first each year (Part B deductible) | You pay it | You pay it |
| Doctor visits | Nothing more after the yearly amount | Up to $20 per visit after the yearly amount |
| Emergency room | Nothing more after the yearly amount | Up to $50 after the yearly amount (waived if you're admitted) |
| Extra fees some doctors charge | Covered | Not covered |
| See any doctor who takes Medicare | Yes | Yes |
The standard coverage for each plan letter is the same no matter which insurance company you pick. Prices differ. Some states use different standard plans.
